 MINUTES

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

February 12, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Tim Clark, Aileen Colon, Vice President Terence Endersen, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, Secretary Jeff Miller, President Mike Ruehle, and Treasurer Christopher Van Horn. Executive Board members Charles Folks, John Forstrom, and Larry Jordan were absent and excused. Twenty-four additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

Catrina Hanna of the Bay Shore Library spoke about the current budget problems of the library. President Mike Ruehle presented her with a check for $300, a donation from the BSRA. Ms. Hanna answered questions from the audience about additional donations and volunteer opportunities.

Treasurer Christopher Van Horn reported the checking account balance is $4,470.60.

There was no representative from the LBPD present, so no report was available. President Ruehle reported an increase in auto burglaries in Belmont Shore.

Nancy Buchanan, BSBA representative, announced the next "Coffee with the Commander" meeting and the Chocolate Festival event.

Julie Maleki of Councilmember DeLong's office reported the status of the on line permit system for the pilot parking program in the beach lots. Publicity for the program was discussed. Ms. Maleki announced recent repairs of sidewalks on Granada Ave. and planned street repairs of The Toledo. She announced meetings to discuss rebuilding plans for the Belmont Plaza pool (March 4 at 6:30 pm at La Palapa) and construction plans for Colorado Lagoon (March 12 at 6:00 pm at Lowell School).

Danielle Dauphine announced the Alive Theater's Cherry Poppin' Play Festival at the Queen Mary on three weekends beginning February 20.

Rich Carry announced the Long Beach Grand Prix kickoff party on February 19 at 7 pm at Club V2O.

Barbara Anders announced the Red Cross blood drive at the Bay Shore Church on February 21 from 8 am to 2 pm.

Bill Lorbeer, member of the Belmont Shore Parking Commission, reported the delay of the bonds for alley repairs and parking lot purchase because of the unavailability of funding.

Ryan Alsop of the Long Beach Water Department spoke about sewer problems caused by improper disposal of "FOG" (fats, oils, and grease) by restaurants and residents. He explained that the FOG disposal by restaurants which don't have proper grease traps or which do not maintain their traps properly accounts for most of the sewer spills reported in Long Beach.

Dave Roseman, Long Beach Traffic Engineer, discussed the proposal for changing the regulations governing oversize vehicle parking.

Christopher Van Horn announced the BSRA "shop local" promotion offered by Dr. Gallagher: a chiropractic adjustment for $20, offered to Belmont Shore residents the last Friday of every month.

President Ruehle announced the application by Lucille's restaurant for a full liquor license. Discussion of the issue followed. Derek Burnham of the Long Beach Development Services Department said city planning staff would recommend approval by the Planning Commission of a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for the expansion and waiver of the requirement for additional parking. A motion by Jeff Miller to file a written protest of the liquor license and CUP was approved, with 5 votes yes, 3 votes no.

President Ruehle announced the city Marine Bureau plans to allow a kite surfing concession to operate on the beach near the LaVerne Ave. parking lot.

Jeff Miller reported the BSBA/BSRA Communication Committee met recently, and discussed the Shop Local campaign and Christmas Parade improvements.

Luann Cadby and Bill Lorbeer questioned the incorporation filing by BSRA last year. Secretary Jeff Miller explained the form was filed because it had been neglected several years ago when the association name was changed from Belmont Shore Improvement Association (BSIA) to Belmont Shore Residents Association (BSRA). BSIA had been incorporated long ago.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 pm.
